DESIGN
We wanted to create a chair, with a unified design. In addition of different positions, the chair would provide different levels of privacy, local comprehension and usage.
The source of inspiration for the newly designed chair derived from a butterfly, from the evolution of the butterfly from a cocoon. We chose three stages of this evolution: 1. The caterpillar pupates into the cocoon
2. The cocoon bursts and the butterfly is halfway out
3. A fully developed butterfly is out in the open
THE CHAIR
We developed a chair that has one fixed and one moving part. The latter part represents the seat as well as a couch, which can be lifted or submerged into the fixed part that is a form of a shell. It can provide three different levels of privacy: open, half open or closed. We can submerge from the 'communicating' position to the reading position and further on, into the sanctuary of the shell, the meditation position. The chair is constructed in such a way, that by changing the lining of the chair, the function of the chair changes as well, from a deck chair to an office recliner.
