GENERAL
The investor intends to build a hotel on Lake Ohrid in Macedonia. The hotel has 250 suites and 6 luxury suites and 30 apartments. It acts as a self-sufficient unit. The hotel business is complemented by the accompanying program. This is a spa (swimming pool, sauna), a restaurant, conference centre and program on the square in front of the hotel (amphitheatre). The basement floor is used for parking.
BASIS
The basis for the design of the hotel is created by cultural and natural resources. Cultural asset of the environment is the traditional regional architecture and art of the nearby region. Natural features of the area is the Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine and mild winters, the beauty of Lake Ohrid, panorama of the pristine nature and the landscape around the lake.
SPATIAL CONCEPT
The basis of the design is to offer the user the best view of Lake Ohrid and hotel rooms’ optimum exposure to the sun. Spatially, the hotel consists of two volumes of spread shells, which together with the third shell volume in the back of the market, create a "necklace". The volumes of the shells hover over the base, which creates a public hotel terrace on which these shells lie.
Front volume of the shells are spaced and raised by one level and thus offer and frame a panoramic view of the entire plot. The base becomes a market –hotel’s plaza with a public program. On the market lie oval shaped spatial elements of the public program; these are amphitheatre (theatre, cinema) and islands of greenery. The market is running between the two shells in an elliptical plateau with an open pool. Spatial design of the hotel offers a panoramic image of Lake Ohrid from the entire market.
